Faire: A Game-Changer for UK Makers?

Have you heard about Faire? It's not just another online marketplace - it's a potential game-changer for UK Makers looking to expand their wholesale horizons. Let's dive in and see why Faire might be your next big business move!
What's All the Fuss About?
Faire is a B2B marketplace that connects independent retailers with unique brands and makers. But here's the kicker - it's not just for the big players. Small-scale UK makers like us can get in on the action too!
Why Should UK Makers Care?
Global Reach: Imagine your handcrafted goodies in shops across the US, Canada, and Europe. No passport required!
Verified Retailers: Faire does the legwork, so you're dealing with legitimate businesses. No more sleepless nights wondering if that order is genuine.
Secure Payments: They handle the money stuff, including covering 60-day payment terms for eligible customers. Cash flow worries? Not on Faire's watch!
But Wait, There's More!
No Set-up Fees: You read that right. It costs nothing to get started. Your budget will thank you!
Marketing Magic: Faire offers free marketing tools. It's like having your own PR team (well, almost).
Time-Saver Supreme: Easy order management means less admin faff and more making time. Win-win!
The Nitty-Gritty: Fees and Costs
Now, let's talk brass tacks. Here's what you need to know about Faire's fee structure for UK makers:
Commission: 25% on first orders from new customers, 15% on repeat orders
New Customer Fee: Additional £8 (approx. $10) on opening orders
Payment Processing: 2.9% + £0.30 for next-day payouts, 1.9% + £0.30 for standard 30-day payouts
Faire Direct: 0% commission on orders from your existing customers
Remember, these fees cover access to Faire's vast marketplace, marketing tools, and customer incentives. It's worth doing the maths to see if it aligns with your profit margins.
UK Success Stories
Faire has been making waves in the UK market since its launch here in March 2021. In just one year, they've achieved some impressive milestones:
Nearly 50,000 UK retailers have joined the platform
75% of orders from UK retailers came from UK-based brands, supporting local growth
Our Experience
While we haven’t sold on Faire we have purchased from a number of brands and indeed discovered new brands on the platform with exciting and affordable product ranges.
And the ordering process was a breeze, great communications with the brands and excellent delivery times. And if any of your buyers (retailers) are on Shopify there is even an app that syncs the order and product information to their store, making it even easier and quicker to get your product in front of their customers.
Getting On To Faire
The application process is fairly simple (excuse the pun). All you need to do is complete the application process online with your business and product details. Get more details on this link.
So, crafty comrades, what do you think? Are you tempted to give Faire a try? Or perhaps you're already selling there? Share your thoughts in the comments - we'd love to hear your experiences!
Remember, in the ever-changing world of craft business, sometimes you've got to faire and share to get anywhere!
Tip Of The Week
Personalised Inserts: Your Secret Weapon for Customer Loyalty

Today, we're diving into a simple yet powerful strategy to boost your business: personalised inserts in your customer order packages. It's time to transform that plain brown box into a marketing powerhouse!
Why bother with inserts, you ask? Well, they're a brilliant way to:
Thank your customers personally
Promote your business effortlessly
Grow your all-important email list
Let's break it down, shall we?
Firstly, a heartfelt 'thank you' goes a long way. Craft a genuine message that makes your customers feel truly appreciated. Remember, you're not just selling products; you're building relationships.
When we started our first e-commerce store back in 2003, one of the first things we added to our packages was a personally written thank you message with each and every one of our orders.
And guess what? More often than not, when customers left a review, they would make a special mention of the personal message. They'd rave about what a wonderful touch it was and how memorable it made their experience. It's amazing how such a simple gesture can leave such a lasting impression!
Secondly, use this opportunity to showcase your brand. Include a brief story about your making journey, or highlight your best-selling items. Got a social media presence? Don't forget to include those handles!
Now, here's the clever bit
Collecting email addresses. Offer an incentive for customers to join your mailing list. Perhaps a discount on their next order or entry into a monthly prize draw. Make it irresistible!
But how to create these inserts without breaking the bank? Enter our old friend, Canva. With its user-friendly interface and plethora of templates, you can design eye-catching inserts in no time. Pop them on some quality card stock, and voila!
Remember to keep it concise, visually appealing, and on-brand. And don't forget to include a QR code (see our previous issue for a refresher on those!) linking directly to your sign-up form.
By implementing this strategy, you're not just shipping products; you're delivering an experience. It's these little touches that transform one-time buyers into loyal customers and brand advocates.
Insert Options
When in comes to putting your inserts into practice there are several options depending on your creativity and budget. One of the easiest is using a thank you style complement slip template on Canva.com.
Essentially you can use the template, update with your details, save as an image and then import that image into an A4 size document either within Canva or Word and duplicate one under another until you fill the page. Then simply print as many copies as you need.
The other alternative is to request some done for you slips or cards from some of the very creative and talented sellers on Etsy. Take a look here for some of the wonderful, done for you, options available.
So, fellow Makers, are you ready to insert some magic into your packaging? We'd love to hear your experiences and see your creative inserts. Share them with us, and let's build stronger connections with our customers, one package at a time!
Purposeful Packaging
Organza Bags: Unravelling the Eco-Friendly Truth

This week we're diving into the world of organza bags - those sheer, delicate pouches that many of us use to package our handmade goodies. But are they as eco-friendly as we think? Let's pull back the curtain and see what's really going on with these popular packaging options.
The Silk Road: Where It All Began
Once upon a time, organza bags were the bees' knees of eco-friendly packaging. Made from silk, they were truly organic and biodegradable. Lovely stuff, right? But here's the rub - those silky wonders now come with a hefty price tag that'd make your wallet weep.
The Polyester Takeover
Fast forward to today, and most of the organza bags we see are about as natural as a plastic daisy. They're typically made from polyester or similar synthetic materials. Now, don't get me wrong - they look the part and they're budget-friendly. But biodegradable? Not a chance. These bags will be hanging around long after we've shuffled off this mortal coil.
RPET: The New Kid on the Block
But wait! There's a new contender in town - RPET organza bags. These clever little numbers are made from recycled plastic bottles. While they're not biodegradable, they do give those pesky plastic bottles a second life. It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.
Show Me the Money: Cost Comparisons
Now, let's talk brass tacks. Here's a rough guide to what you might expect to pay for 100 medium-sized (10x15cm) organza bags in the UK:
• Silk Organza Bags: £80-£120
• Polyester Organza Bags: £3-£8
• RPET Organza Bags: £10-£20
Quite a difference, eh? It's easy to see why many of us opt for the synthetic versions.
What's a Maker to Do?
So, what's the takeaway here? Well, if you're using polyester organza bags, they're not the eco-warriors you might have thought. But don't panic! Here are a few ideas:
Consider switching to RPET bags for a more eco-friendly option.
If budget allows, silk organza bags are still the gold standard for biodegradability.
Look into alternative packaging options like recycled paper bags or boxes.
Whatever you choose, be transparent with your customers about your packaging choices.
Remember, every small step towards sustainability counts. We're all in this together, trying to balance our business needs with our environmental conscience.
So, crafty friends, what are your thoughts on organza bags? Have you found any brilliant eco-friendly alternatives? Pop your ideas in the comments - we'd love to hear them!

A Gifters Haven: Our Visit to Just Smile Designs in York

Ever visited a place that instantly feels like home? That's exactly what happened when we popped into Just Smile Designs, a delightful shop owned by the talented illustrator Kerry, during our trip to York back in May.
From Online to High Street
Kerry's journey began online, selling on Etsy and promoting her business through events. Her big break came when she joined Spark York, a container village for startups, where she set up her first shop. Now, she's moved into her own bricks-and-mortar space, bringing her signature koala mascot and floral-themed designs to life in the heart of York, just a stone's throw from the magnificent Minster.
A Warm Welcome
As we entered, we were greeted by Kerry's mother, who was wonderfully welcoming. We spent some time chatting with her while Kerry was hard at work upstairs. It's always lovely to connect with fellow crafters, and this chat led to a surprising discovery—we had lived in the next village to each other in Staffordshire several years ago! Small world, isn't it?
Inspiration Around Every Corner
When Kerry joined us, we had the pleasure of hearing her inspiring journey from a hobbyist to a full-time business owner. She shared how important it is to support local artisans and makers—a sentiment we wholeheartedly agree with.
Her shop is a treasure trove of beautifully crafted products, each reflecting a unique blend of creativity and personal touch. From personalised resin keyrings and name plaques to elegant jewellery and keepsake frames, the attention to detail in each product is truly inspiring.
But that's not all! As we explored further, we discovered a whimsical world of Kerry's illustrations brought to life:
Summer Hats: Adorable strawberry bee bucket hats and sakura hedgehog baseball caps for both adults and kids.
Tote Bags: Charming designs featuring sakura hedgehogs and viking bears, perfect for shopping or beach trips.
Clothing Range: Organic cotton t-shirts and sweatshirts adorned with Kerry's unique characters like floral foxes and bunny hops.
Stationery: Delightful cards for every occasion, from birthdays to new baby congratulations.
Home Comforts: Ceramic mugs, coasters, and even mousemats to brighten up your living space.
Kerry's passion for her craft and community shines through not just in her work but in her generous spirit as well. She kindly guided us on where to find other shops and venues in York that celebrate local makers, making sure we didn't miss out on the city's vibrant artisan scene.
Why We Think You'll Love It
Personalisation Galore: Whether it's custom jewellery or bespoke keepsakes, Kerry's creations are perfect for adding that special touch to your own projects. The custom name plaques, for example, are ideal for children's rooms or as thoughtful gifts, while the resin bookmarks are not only functional but also beautiful.
Whimsical Designs: Kerry's illustrations are simply charming. From sakura hedgehogs to viking bears, each character seems to have a story to tell!
Eco-Friendly Options: Many products, like the t-shirts and tote bags, are made from organic cotton. Mother Nature approves!
Affordable Treats: With prices starting from just £2.70 for cards and £8.50 for tote bags, you can treat yourself without breaking the bank.
Support Local: Shopping here means supporting local artisans—something close to our hearts. Kerry's passion for her craft shines through in every piece, making each purchase feel personal and meaningful.
A Lesson in Presentation: The shop itself is a testament to how beautifully displayed products can elevate the customer experience. Each item is thoughtfully arranged, showcasing the craftsmanship and care that goes into every piece.
Pay Kerry A Visit
If you're ever in York, make sure to visit Just Smile Designs. It's not just a shop—it's a source of inspiration and community. Kerry's friendly and helpful nature makes the experience even more memorable, and you might leave with more than a smile and a few beautifully crafted pieces.
Plus, with Kerry's insider tips, you can explore even more of York's incredible maker community. And if you can't make it to York? Don't worry! Kerry's delightful creations are available online too, bringing a bit of that Just Smile magic right to your doorstep.
So, crafty comrades, which of Kerry's creations catches your eye? A sakura hedgehog tote or perhaps a viking bear mug? Share your thoughts in the comments - let's spread the maker love!

Gazebo Gurus: Finding Your Perfect Market Stall Shelter

Image Photo Courtesy of Gala Tent
Ever found yourself doing a “rain dance” at a craft fair, desperately trying to keep your handmade goodies dry? We've all been there, haven't we? Let's chat about finding the perfect gazebo to keep your crafty creations safe and dry, come rain or shine!
Size Matters
How much space do you really need?
3m x 3m: The Goldilocks of gazebos - not too big, not too small. Perfect for most markets.
2m x 2m: Cosy but crafty! Ideal for smaller pitches or newbie makers.
3m x 4.5m or 3m x 6m: For when you've got more stock than you can shake a knitting needle at!
Remember, bigger isn't always better - you'll need to lug it around! Have you thought about how you'll transport it?
Weather-Wise Choices
British weather, eh? As unpredictable as a cat in a room full of laser pointers! Look for:
Waterproof canopy: PVC-coated polyester is your best mate here.
UV-resistant material: Keep those vibrant crafts from fading faster than a British summer!
Wind-resistant frame: Aluminium is light enough to carry but sturdy enough to stand its ground.
Versatility is Key
Can your gazebo multitask better than you do on market day?
Removable sidewalls: For when you need to go from outdoor warrior to indoor wonder in a jiffy.
Easy set-up: Because no one wants to be that person still pitching their tent when the market's in full swing!
Branding Brilliance
Make your stall pop like a fresh batch of colourful bath bombs! Choose a colour that complements your brand and consider custom printing - it's like a great haircut for your gazebo! While some suppliers will offer printing direct onto the gazebo material, other options include removable banner and valance wraps, which are worth consideration.
The Price is Right
Quality gazebos aren't cheap, but they're an investment. Think of it as your crafty superhero cape - worth every penny!
Here’s a few popular choices:
Gala Tent - Established in 1999
Rock Awnings - Established 2006
Gorilla Gazebos - One of the most popular commercial brands on Amazon
So, crafty comrades, what's your gazebo horror story? Or better yet, your gazebo success story? Pop your thoughts in the comments below - we'd love to hear from you!
Remember, the right gazebo isn't just about staying dry - it's about creating a cosy little haven for your crafts to shine. Now go forth and conquer those craft fairs, rain or shine!
AI For Makers
AI Prompts: Your Secret Weapon for Maker Success

Today, we're diving into the world of AI prompts - a game-changer for your handmade business. Buckle up, because this might just revolutionise how you operate!
So, what's all the fuss about? Well, AI prompts are like having a super-smart assistant at your fingertips. They can help you whip up product descriptions, brainstorm new ideas, or even plan your next workshop - all in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it solo.
But here's the kicker
It's not just about saving time (though that's brilliant). AI prompts can give your creativity a proper boost, help you cut costs, and keep you one step ahead in our ever-changing maker world.
Now, how do you make the most of these digital genies? Here are our top tips:
Be crystal clear: The more specific you are, the better the results. Think tone, style, and purpose.
Give context: Fill your AI in on your business background. It's not nosy, just helpful!
Refine and repeat: Don't be afraid to tweak your prompts until you get exactly what you need.
Add your personal touch: Use AI as a starting point, then sprinkle in your unique maker magic.
Let's get practical, shall we? Here are some prompts to try:
"Write a punchy product description for my handcrafted wooden spoons, highlighting the locally sourced oak and traditional techniques used."
"Create five Instagram captions for my new line of eco-friendly pottery. Don't forget to throw in some trending UK craft hashtags!"
"Outline a beginner's workshop plan for needle felting, including materials needed and step-by-step instructions."
An in all of these don’t forget…
To add something along the lines of “Use British English spelling and colloquialisms”. Also be as specific as possible with the number of words you would like in the end result.
Remember, AI is here to enhance your skills, not replace them. Your unique craftmanship and creativity are what make your products special. Think of AI as your trusty sidekick, helping you focus on what you do best - creating beautiful, handmade items.
So, fellow Makers, are you ready to give AI prompts a whirl? We'd love to hear how you're using them in your business. Share your experiences, and let's harness this technology to take our maker journeys to new heights!
